Commission Pricing

Pricing an original bronze sculpture commission involves a variety of factors. The two factors which influence cost most significantly are the size and the composition of the work(s). Other factors which are taken into account are delivery location, installation requirements, and timetable.

The process begins with detailed discussions between the client and the artist about the creative direction of the work and the total cost. Once these points have been agreed upon, Alan Cottrill will typically create a reduced scale maquette (model) for larger pieces. The maquette allows the client to see and approve the form and composition before the final full-scale work is created. For works that are not very large, such as life size busts and small figures, a maquette is typically not produced. Finally, the full-scale work is created in clay, then molded into wax and cast into bronze. The final finish and patina of the work is also selected by the client.

Bronze can be finished in a variety of tones depending on the patina selected. Indoor works will then be sealed with a buffed-wax finish while outdoor works will receive a coating of lacquer, followed by multiple coats of sealing wax. Monumental size and multiple-figure works may take longer.
